Becoming a School Bus Driver
Requirements:
- Must be 21 years of age or older
- Must obtain a Class B Commercial Driver's License with a Passenger and School Bus Endorsement
Obtaining a CDL:
- Complete a background check ($51.40 Fee)
- Complete ELDT Theory Online Training Modules
- Pass CDL Class B (Endorsements PS) Permit at Oneonta DMV ($25.00 Fee)
- Register for the FMCSA Clearinghouse
- Complete Alabama Bus Physical or DOT Physical ($50.00-$100.00 - Fees vary)
- Complete a pre-employment drug test (Fees vary)
- Complete at least 10 hours of training with Oneonta trainer
- Create an AIM account with Alabama State Department of Education
- Complete 3-day New Driver Class with the Alabama State Department
- Score at least 80% on written test at the end of the new driver class
- Pass Pre-Trip Inspection, Basic Control Skills Test (backing), and Driving Skills Test
CDL Permit:
- Pass 4 tests given at the license office. Study materials are available online and at local license office.

How to apply:
- Complete a classified application with the Alabama State Department of Education.
- Required Documentation:
- Class B CDL PS Endorsements
- Copy of high school diploma, college diploma, or GED
- Copy of social security card
- Pre-employment drug screening (must schedule with Transportation Supervisor)
Maintaining CDL:
- Drivers are required to attend a yearly 4 hour Recertification class
